Sclerotherapy Treatment

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat spider veins, which are smaller and larger, similar to varicose veins. Varicose veins are large abnormal veins that are swollen and twisted, mostly in the legs. Larger varicose veins, such as trunk veins that extend from the groin and inner thigh to the inner calf, can be effectively treated with intravenous ablation, a non-surgical treatment that often results in successful closure of the abnormal target vein. Spider veins may persist after intravenous ablation and require additional sclerotherapy treatment.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an injection therapy that uses a thin needle to inject medication into a vein that irritates the lining of the vein.

The vascular surgeon first cleans and disinfects the treatment area, then uses a very fine needle to inject a saline-based solution into the affected vein. This solution irritates the lining of the veins, causing them to swell and close, and blocking blood flow. After administration, the needle is removed and pressure and a compression pad are applied to the treatment area. In a short period of time, the treated veins close in response to the stimulus and are reabsorbed by the body.

You can have multiple injections in the same procedure to treat different veins. After a while, the treated veins are reabsorbed by the body and eventually fade away.

Who needs sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy can be a highly effective treatment for small varicose or spider veins. Frequent treatments are not uncommon, as spider veins can recur, but in different areas. If you have unsightly or mild varicose veins that cause discomfort, you may be a candidate for sclerotherapy. Ongoing treatment may be recommended for maintenance. Treatment for varicose veins varies from person to person; discuss your condition with one of our specialists to determine if sclerotherapy is right for you.
